Written away from the room where the consensus forms
degorgeaeris is an independent economics journal. We publish from Low Coylton, a small settlement in South Ayrshire, because the UK economy is not a London specialism. The labour market, the housing stock, the energy system and the Scottish fiscal framework all look different when you are not sitting on a Docklands dealing floor.
What we are
We write essays and a monthly briefing on the UK economy. The beat is orthodox on purpose: monetary policy, the public finances, housing, labour, productivity, energy, trade, and Scotland. We are not a forecast shop and we do not sell access. If a number in an ONS release or a Bank of England report is doing more work than it can bear, we say so.
The name is a private construction — a nod to the gorge of the Doon a few miles west of here, and to aes, aeris, the Latin for copper, the old metal of small money. We kept it lowercase. It is a masthead, not a holding company.
What we are not
We are not authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority. Nothing on this site is an invitation to buy or sell a security, a gilt, a house or a currency. We do not take advertising from financial firms. Correspondence comes to a single inbox and is read by a person.
Where we work
The practice sits at Low Coylton, Coylton, Ayr KA6 6LE. Burns country, five miles from the coast, a long way from Threadneedle Street. The point of the address is not romance. It is a reminder that most of the country lives with the consequences of decisions taken in rooms they will never enter.
